Active winter vacations: Snowboarder in Allgäu

Visitors of the Allgäu are often awed by the beauty of the winter wonderland, where glittering snow covers the landscape. You can climb the mountain summits and race down, or you can just relax and wind down. Winter in the Allgäu shows many different sides, from Nordic skiing world cups to romantic evenings in a cozy mountain cabin. Have fun on halfpipes, mogul slopes, free-ride areas and well-kept cross country skiing runs or walk along on winter hiking trails, enjoy the panorama views on the sun terrace or a ride in a comfortable horse-drawn carriage.

Alpine skiing

Carving, snow boarding and telemarking is possible until late spring and on slopes that are not too busy. Slopes with a total length of 300 km (190 miles) guarantee fun for all ages. The skiing areas are very different in character - you choose.

In the Allgäu, more than 200 high-performance lifts and cable cars take skiers up the slopes of the two-country skiing resort of the Fellhorn-Kanzelwand, to the world-cup slopes of Hörner and to the Oberjoch, near Bad Hindelang. We recommend buying the “Ski-Card” with which you can use all lifts in the Allgäu-Walser or "Vitales Land" area. Of course in all these areas snow is guaranteed, but you can also be sure to have a lot of fun in the skiing and boarding parks, the designated free-ride runs and in the cozy mountain cabins.

Some winter sport enthusiasts also climb the beautiful summits, take a deep breath and then ski down the virgin slopes to leave their traces in the untouched snow. Of course good planning in advance is mandatory. A professional tour guide can assist you.

Nordic skiing

Skiing in the bright winter sun or under the starry sky. Three climate zones, four valleys with snow-guarantee and hundreds of cross country skiing runs will help you get away from the stress of everyday life. In this area, which is home to many ski world champions, you can pick and choose from a broad offer of activities: follow the traces of the champions on the alpine slopes, enjoy the beautiful nature that surrounds you on the cross country skiing runs, do a skiing course or watch one of the numerous world-class competitions.

Winter hiking
Get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Breathe in the crystal clear air. Listen to the sound of snow crunching under your feet. Feel happy and relaxed. All these dreams can become true in the winter world of the Allgäu, with its awe-inspiring views of the mountains set against the bright blue sky.

Winter in Allgäu has got many different aspects: you can watch the feeding of wild game, go on a horse carriage ride, covered in warm blankets, or visit cozy mountain cabins and enjoy the warmth of an open fire.

The Allgäu is full of winter traditions – why don’t you try and discover them? Go on a ride with the „Holz- und Heuschalengge“, a huge transport sledge. Enjoy the great views of the snow dunes of the Hohen Ifen and discover the untouched nature on your own.

Indoor

You can bathe under palm trees in the spas of Bad Wörishofen , Bad Waldsee and Schwangau and have a relaxing sauna in the Vitaltherme Oberstdorf. Kids love the wide variety of swimming fun with water slides and current channels in the adventure pools from “A” like Aquaria to “W” like Wonnemar.

Many use their vacation to exercise in one of the numerous sports parks, and get in shape for the next climbing tour on one of the artificial climbing walls. There are countless other indoor activities, from ice skating to badminton, beach volleyball and tennis. If you are after something a bit slower-paced, you might want to visit one of the museums, like the farming museum or the Allgäu museum.

Outdoor

Ice age in Allgäu, with frozen water in all forms and shapes: cascades, towers… The frozen surfaces of the lakes offer prime conditions for Bavarian curling. Discover ice cold canyons - glide, slide and fall - of course in a safety harness. Climb up frozen waterfalls with ice axe and spurs, guided by a professional.

Alternatively, you can watch the pros in the stadiums of Oberstdorf, Sonthofen and Füssen, where ice skating, ice hockey and curling competitions take place. And who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired to discover the ice on your own? There are plenty of instructors to support you.
