Buildings and Architecture in the Region Ammersee - Lech

St. Ottilien Abbey - near Landsberg am Lech

This abbey church with its mighty 70 meter tower surmounts and dominates the monastery-village. The three-nave basilica with its transept and its straight choir termination in the harsh simple style of benedictine-cistercian Gothic appears to reach out from the Middle Ages, even though this church is not older than the monastery whose heart and middle it constitutes.

The three-nave hall with its cross-vault is richly emblazed with figurative and ornamental sculptures made of shell limestone and artificial stone. The plastered wall is bright throughout, columns and arches are made of ashlars. Wide clearstory windows allow for enough light in the nave, while the nave aisles are equipped with lancet windows and the transept has impressive rosette-windows.

The main aisle contains the way of  the sibyls and prophets (floor panels made of brass and shell limestone), planned and created (1993) by F.B. Weißhaar. The Old Testament and Late Antiquity Seer figures bear witness to the desire of all humanity for the Coming of the redeemer and for the Grace of God. This also shows the evangelical mission of Ottilian's Benedictines.

St. Mary Minster - Marienmünster Diessen

Diessen's greatest sight is the Marienmünster, erected between 1732 and 1739 by the baroque master builder Johann Michael Fischer, which was the center of the former convent Augustiner-Chorherrenstift until 1803. The impressive building has a wonderfully festive, elegant interior. The high altar was designed by Francois Cuvilliés, the ceiling paintings by Johann Georg Bergmüller, respectively. The stucco works were created by the brothers Feichtmayr, one of the pulpits by Johann Baptist Straub. Worth seeing are furthermore the altar paintings of Italian artists Tiepolo and Pittoni, as well as a statue of St. Peter by Erasmus Grasser.

Convent of the Ursulines - Ursulinenkloster Landsberg

In 1719 the citizens of Landsberg called the Ursulines to their town: The nuns, mostly focused on catechises and education, were trusted with the education of the town's girls. In 1725 a first provisional church was erected by Dominikus Zimmermann; today's church and convent were constructed in 1764/65, also according to construction plans by the aged architect.

Castle of Kaltenberg - Schloss Kaltenberg

The Castle of Kaltenberg, scene of thrilling joustling tournaments, has an exciting history. Born 1531 in Ingolstadt, the geographer and mathematician Philipp Apian mentions the Castle of Kaltenberg in his 1566 Topographia Bavariae an already old fortress. Built in 1292, the castle was home to the noble dynasty of the "zu Haldenbergs" during the late 13th century. In 1320 the estate was destroyed in the wake of a family feud.
