The county of Aschaffenburg borders the federal state of Hesse in the West and North, and the counties Main-Spessart and Miltenberg in the East and South.
Geologically and geographically it is a very diversified county. You’ll find alluvial deposits in the lowlands of the Main River and fertile clay soil in the "Bachgau" area. The foothills of the Spessart Mountains are made up of gneiss and granite whilst these primordial rocks are superposed by sandstone in the high mountains. You can trace back the formation of the low mountain range from the Kahl River estuary at 100m above sea level up to the highest point of the Spessart Mountains, the Geierskopf Mountain at 586 m above sea level. The county’s climate is mild continental to moderate oceanic.
Industry in the county centers around textile and clothing, wood processing and paper production, chemistry, electro technology, precision engineering, steel manufacture and mechanical engineering, as well as the food industry.
Another important economical factor in the area is tourism. The county is located in an ideal climatic area and its beautiful nature, most of all the Spessart Nature Park, attracts numerous visitors.
The most important architectural and art monuments are the fairy-tale water castle of Mespelbrunn (16th century), the pilgrimage church of Hessenthal (1439) with its bountiful interior, the late Gothic castle Alzenau (1395), the former monastery Schmerlenbach (13th century, church 1758), the market square and church in Großostheim (from the13th century) , and the pilgrimage church in Alzenau-Kälberau (14th to 16th century). In addition there are numerous castles and royal residences as well as artfully designed churches and chapels.
The county is subdivided into 32 communities, including one city and five markets. 12 communities have been combined to form three administrative collectivities.
