Inspired by the excavations at Pompeji, King Ludwig I had the perfect reconstruction of a Roman villa built by Friedrich von Gärtner (1840–1848). It is a copy of a house in Pompeji, the house of Castor and Pollux, named after a mural painting located in the entrance area.
Mural paintings and mosaic floors in the gloriously colourful rooms were created from Roman examples. Today they form an appropriate backdrop to the exhibition of original art works from the state antiquity collections.
The Pompejanum is picturesquely situated at the top of a vineyard, overlooking the Main, and in the middle of a Mediterranean-style garden with almond and fig trees.
