To cross the Alps with your mountain bike - regardless of which route you take - is one of the biggest biking adventures you can experience. The Alps with their bizarre stone formations, breathtaking panoramas and green valleys are the safest mountains of the world: there are alps where you can stay for a bite or a night, and the ways to reach the safety of civilisation are short.
Years on, you will still remember this spectacular experience with joy: a time when you were at one with nature and took on the challenge for body and soul - that is "Transalp".
There are various possibilities to cross the alps. Possibly the most popular and easiest way is the Via Claudia. The Romans built the first proper road over Fern and Resia Pass almost 2000 years ago. Then, it was the easiest way over the Alps. Today, the Via Claudia provides mountain bikers with the easiest Transalp crossing.
Apart from the Via Claudia there are various other routes like the Transalp Brenner Grenzkamm: Starting point: Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Igles - Sattelbergalm - Franzensfeste - Lajen - Caldonazzo - Rovereto - Torbole to Lake Garda where you can enjoy a swim in cool water.
Another route leads from Lake Chiemsee to Lake Garda: Chiemsee - Ellmau - Filzenscharte - Krimmler Tauern - Astjoch - Gschmargenhardtwiese - Seiser Alm - Tiers - Karer See - Jochgrimm - Trudner Horn - Lago Santo - Rifugio Maranza - Lago di Cei - Riva.
You will find information in the internet for individual tours, for example on www.mountainbike.bueschges.com. If, however, you prefer a trip organized by professional guides, you get - amongst others - competent sevice and information at Transalptours (website in German only) a tour operator in Garmisch.
