The village of Bessenbach was established in 1972 during the Bavarian government reform by combining the communities of Keilberg and Straßbessenbach. Six years later the community of Oberbessenbach was incorporated as well. Together with all surrounding small hamlets Bessenbach consists of 10 communities.
For Spessart standards Bessenbach is fairly old. It was first officially mentioned in a document from the year 1184, in which Pope Lucius III confirms its goods and possessions in Bessenbach to the Aschaffenburg monastery. Bessenbach was then already a parish seat responsible for many parts of the Spessart uplands. Bessenbach’s rulers were the landlords. After the Bavarian government reform the community took on its historic name “Bessenbach” again. The coat of arms, a stork with two heads, is also derived from the coat of arms of the lords of Bessenbach.
Today Bessenbach is a lovable and liveable place with high living quality, friendly gastronomy, diversified business and commerce, and not to forget a sportive and cultural life supported by motivated and pleasant club members. Despite being located close to Aschaffenburg, Bessenbach has managed to keep its rural charm. In the smaller communities around Keilberg there is still active and intensive agriculture.
Many signposted paths, for example the cultural circular trail „Oberbessenbach - eine Spessarter Urpfarrei an der alten Poststraße“ lead through the densely-wooded community area and offer great hiking or cycling opportunities through the beautiful Spessart Mountains. Along the paths wayside shrines and crosses refer back to past times and invite passers-by to take a break and say a quiet prayer.
Especially worth seeing is the Kirchberg (church hill) in Oberbessenbach, dominated by the monumental parish church of St. Stephanus, whose Baroque tower overlooks the whole valley. Right next to it there is the Ottilien Church, one of the few buildings in the Spessart, which have kept their medieval looks until today. The combination of these two buildings is unique in the cultural landscape of the Spessart. The St. George’s Church in Keilberg, symbol of a rich history, overlooks the Bessenbach valley and keeps the 800-year-old history of the Jörgenberg Mountain alive.
