Impressions from Dachau 

The Upper Bavarian town of  Dachau loves its contrasts. Shaped by and grown through historical extremes, it is today a town of modern standards. In the 12th century, the Earls of Dachau built their castle on the upper market, which is now the historical town center. Between 1546 and 1573, the Wittelsbach dynasty had a four-wing Renaissance Palace built at the highest point of Dachau, which became – due to its lovely surroundings – the favorite country estate of Munich's Court.

Its West Wing still stands – and has, for over 25 years now, served as venue for the renowned Palace Concerts, the cultural highlight of the year.

The Concentration Camp turned Dachau into a synonym for the inhuman terror of the Nazi regime. This period in time is still actively commemorated today. The memorial provides information in a museum, an archive, and through many events; for example the annual symposium of contemporary history.

Not only history, but also art and culture are deeply routed in Dachau. Where once one out of ten residents had been a painter, many artists and painters still shape life in Dachau to this day. Around the turn of the last century, Dachau – along with Worpswede – became one of Germany's most important artists' colonies, and today remains one of Europe's artists' towns.

Numerous events make a visit to Dachau worthwhile all year round: Contemplative hours during the traditional Christmas Market with its alternating Christmas attractions; rather earthy feels the annual Dachau Fair; it takes place in August, and has done so for 120 years.

But that is not all: Dachau's music summer in the historical center, Baroque picnic at the courtyard, numerous restaurants catering to everyone's liking, bars, taverns, nightclubs, galleries, museums, cabaret and theater highlights, all awaiting our guests. And of course, sports fans and nature lovers are also in the very right place.
