Google Maps County of Donau-Ries
The holiday destination of Donau-Ries comprises the communities of the county as well as neighboring communities north, east and south of the region.
Geographically, the holiday country Donau-Ries is made up of three characteristic landscapes. The southern part is characterized by the Danube River and the tributaries of the rivers Woernitz and Lech, which represent one of the largest river networks of Southern Germany.
In the north you’ll find the Swabian Alp, stretching to the west, whilst in the east of the region the Franconian Alp begins to form as the so-called Monheimer Alb. In this area you’ll find lush forests and juniper groves, where sheep graze.
A scenic highlight in the northern part of the county is the „Ries“, which was formed by a meteorite impact 15 million years ago. The Ries Basin has a diameter of 15 km and is not only one of Europe’s largest meteorite craters but also one of the best-preserved and best-explored craters of the world.
The Ries is still a rich source of information for experts and hobby geologists alike and even the NASA conducted their field trainings there, to prepare for missions to the moon.
