The holiday destination of East Allgäu is located in the most beautiful area of Bavaria, between the Ammer Mountains and the Tannheimer Mountains in the south, and the foothills of the Alps around the city of Kaufbeuren in the north. It has as many as 46 lakes with 115 km of shores to offer.
Even the Bavarian Kings could not resist the charms of the county and therefore had their residences built in the area. Crown Prince Maximilian, later to become King Max II had the ruin of Hohenschwangau refurbished and turned into his holiday residence. Not far away, his son, Bavaria’s King Ludwig II realized his dream of a fairy tale castle. His residence, Neuschwanstein Castle has become one of the distinct landmarks of this truly royal holiday destination.
Loved by the royals, today the area is equally popular with tourists.
