There is no place where you can find more Baroque wayside shrines than in the Saale Valley. The corkscrew-shaped columns are usually covered in vines of stone. They can often be found in Elfershausen and surrounds. Like the statues of the Mother of God that can be found in the niches of houses and garden walls, they are often directed towards the white and blue Franconian sky.
You will be welcomed with warm hospitality in the hotels and cosy inns, at festivals in the Baroque castle or in the massive castle ruin “Trimburg”, located in lofty heights. An abundance of alpine flora grows like an alpine garden at the brightly shining shell limestone of the Schwedenberg Mountain.
It is hard to believe that the attempt of growing wine in these inaccessible hills actually yields fruit. But if you have tried the noble grape from Elfershausen and its districts, you will definitely appreciate it.
The “Zwiebelkuchenturm” of Langendorf salutes the driver on the Rhoen Mountains autobahn and invites him to stop for a break at the „Brotzeitland“, in which the world of wine and hiking, of faith and food are strongly connected. If you would like to understand why this was the place where the minnesinger Süßkind composed his „politisch Lied“, visit the castle festival, music festival or other festivities.
