Garmisch-Patenkirchen County is known far beyond Bavaria or Germany for being one of the best places for sports and recreation. Located at the Alps’ northern brink, it offers excellent condition for a relaxing vacation. Especially the natural diversity makes the county a popular destination for vacationers of all ages: High mountain ranges, Alps foothills, and Germany’s highest mountain Zugspitze (2963m).

But many other summits in the county are also reachable by mountain railways, making their magnificent panorama views accessible even for less experienced hikers. Options for tourists include guided tours into the high mountains as well as unhurried hikes through the foothills with their many lakes and untouched moss lands.

There is also a broad cultural range: Opera, Richard Strauss festival, art exhibitions, museums, and concerts on the hand; but also costume fests, peasants’ theater, and folkloric evenings. In summer, numerous mountain lakes offer additional swimming opportunities to the many heated indoor and outdoor pools. Cyclists can choose between challenging mountain bike tours and easy-going biking excursions to the valleys of Isar, Loisach, and Ammer Rivers, or into the lakes and moss lands of the northern county.

About any other recreational fun activity you can think of is on offer here: Rafting, paragliding, surfing, horse-riding, kayaking, climbing, and so on. In winter, guests can not only enjoy Germany’s only glacial skiing region on Zugspitze mountain, but many other Alpine tracks for every taste and skill level, from beginners to professionals and lovers of deep powder snow.

But of course, cross-country skiers are also catered for. Well-prepared runs for all levels, but always with a beautiful scenery in the background. Hikers will be delighted by the snow-vacated paths through the snow-covered environment at all altitude levels. All the other winter sports are offered as well, such as ice skating, curling, ski touring, etc.

Besides the magnificent nature, sights also include the different palaces of fairy tale king Ludwig II in, and near, the county.
