The county of Günzburg as it is today was formed in the Bavarian government reform in 1972. It is mainly made up by the former counties of Günzburg and Krumbach, as well as the urban district of Günzburg.
This solution has a historical as well as a geographical background: the three valleys of the rivers Günz, Kammel and Mindel have always had strong connections even beyond their counties’ borders.
The two former counties and the urban district of Günzburg have also always formed a unity in German regional elections. In addition to this, the areas have always been connected closely economically and on an administrative level. There was one authority, which was responsible for both counties.
Before the three areas were combined, the county consisted of 120 communities, today there are only 34. Instead, there are seven administrative collectivities. The town of Günzburg has the status of „county seat“.
