The town is situated between the two beautiful nature parks Hass Mountains and Steigerwald, directly at the northern bank of River Main. Haßfurt is one of the oldest towns in the district: it was first mentioned in 1230 and received its town charter in 1235 by Würzburg's price-bishop Hermann von Lobdeburg.
The original layout of the charming Old Town can still be recognized as a longdrawn rectangle. The broad main street runs through it and two large town towers are located at both ends of the street. Landmark and most important building of this historic town is the late romanesque knight's chapel (laying of the chancel's foundation stone around 1390, of the nave's in 1431).
The late gothic parish church on the market square houses valuable works by Tilman Riemenschneider (John the Baptist and Mary with Child).
Culture and leisure: meetings and celebrations in the historic Stadthalle in the centre of town. Attractive leisure and adventure pool. In winter: Ice rink, guided tours (town and churches) and much more.
