County of Hof

Welcome to the County of Hof

The county of Hof features a great diversity of geology, flora and fauna, which is what makes the county so special and beautiful. There are four different geographic areas: the northern chain of the Fichtel Mountains with the Waldstein and Kornberg mountain range, the Münchberg Mountains gneiss plateau, the south-eastern and eastern part of the Franconian Forest with the Selbitz River valley and the Hofer Vogtland, a transition zone between the Elster Mountains and the Erz Mountains, where you’ll also find the Saxonian Saale River.

The county of Hof borders the county of Wunsiedel to the south-east, the county of Bayreuth to the south, the county of Kulmbach to the southwest and the county of Kronach to the west. It also shares a border with the Czech Republic in the east and with the Thuringian Saale-Orla district and the Saxonian Vogtlandkreis in the north and north-east.

The county measures about 34km from north to south and 35km from east to west. The border to Saxony and Thuringia is 79.14km long; the border to the Czech Republic measures 24.65km.

Due to the low mountain range the climate is cool and humid. Only the climate in the valleys of the rivers Saale and Selbitz is a bit warmer than that of the surrounding areas.
