The origin of this market place was a Benedictine convent which was founded by Count Ortlof in 1074 at the request of his sister. A settlement developed around it. In 1803, the convent was desolved in the course of the secularisation.
The majestic buildings of the former Benedictine convent still tower over Hohenwart. They now house several schools/homes with a focus on children/people with special needs (e.g. hard of hearing).
Hohenwart is situated in the delightful landscape of the Paar Valley. The fertile ground is used for a variety of crops, for example asparagus and hops.
