"There is no anatomical theatre more distinguished than this one in the whole of Europe", the university chronicler Johann Nepomuk Mederer enthused, as he looked at the baroque building of the Medical Faculty. As experiments had become of great importance in scientific circles, the state university laid the foundations for an "Exercitien Gepäu" (a building for lectures) in 1723, including a large auditorium for dissections and a medicinal herb garden.
Lancets, enema chairs and flea cylinders: Today, the Alte Anatomie, built in the style of an orangery, contains the German Museum of the History of Medicine. This unique collection documents the history of medicine from antiquity to the present day. The herb garden contains an abundance of medicinal plants and a "scent and touch" garden that is also accessible by wheelchair.
