In 1418, Ludwig the Bearded laid the foundations of the Neue Veste (the new citadel), in the centre of which rises the Neues Schloss (New Castle). Today, 17 richly decorated cannons in the castle courtyard show the extent of armory at that time. Two of the oldest of these exhibits of the Bavarian Army Museum, the double cannons royal from the years 1524/25 which go by the name of "Scherer" and "Schererin", are a pair. "He" weighs 9,690 pounds and "she" weighs 9,395 pounds.
Artillery, standards, helmets and tin figures:
Today the "Pappenheimer", an impressive series of black riding harnesses, displayed in the place where in 1618 two festive boards and 42 tables were located for the serving of food and drinks, recall the dark time of the Thirty Years' War. The Bavarian Army Museum is accommodated in the Dürnitz and in a number of wonderful sunlit rooms in the Neues Schloss. On the other side of the Danube, the army museum, the most significant museum of its type in Germany, presents the history of the First World War in the Reduit Tilly, a redoubt built as a stronghold in time of war.
