When you hear the name Irsee, you first think of the monastery. Today the former Benedictine monastery is a Swabian Conference and Education Centre of supra-regional importance. The offerings of the Schwabenakademie, the "Schwäbische Kunstsommer" or the music festival "Klang und Raum" are set components of the regional and supra-regional cultural life. Irsee is also famous for hosting national and international economic and political conventions.
But Irsee has more to offer than just a monastery. Approximately 1350 people live in the market town of Irsee with its hamlets Oggenried, Wielen, Eiberg, Haslach, Bickenried and Alm, in a friendly relationship with today’s "Klosterviertel" (monastery quarter).
Irsee is surrounded by forests and is located on a slope at approximately 8 km from Kaufbeuren. The buildings along the centuries-old streets are erected at an altitude of 740 and 790 metres.
Compared to the surrounding villages of the “Reichsstift Irsee”, the village of Irsee, which was strongly influenced by the monastery, wasn’t a typical agricultural village. The monastery needed workers, handymen and service personnel and thus a special settlement structure was created. Especially in the two former centres of the “upper village“ and the “lower village“ you can still find houses that were built during the times of the monastery. Amongst those are also some commercial and administrational buildings of the monastery, which still strongly influence the village's appearance.
