The community of Krombach is located 20 km north of Aschaffenburg. The name is derived from the correspondent 5-km-long stream, which winds its way through the valley. Another thesis, however, says that the name was developed from "Kronbach" (Krone meaning crown and Bach meaning stream) as it originally used to be royal property.
The parish of Krombach was built in the 9th century by the Seligenstadt Abbey on 47.7 hectares (the equivalent of a “Königshufe”) of the abbey’s grounds. In the following centuries Krombach had alternating rulers and a diversified history. It was for example in the possession of the Count of Rieneck (up to 1559), of the Abbots of Mainz, of the Counts of Groschlag and of the Counts of Schönborn (from 1666). The knights of the Hauenstein castle, vassals of the Counts of Rieneck, haunted the area, especially the covered wagons of the traders on the Birkenhain country road. They were hanged and dragged to the castle. According to a legend, only three families survived the 30 Years War and the Black Death.
With approx. 2,200 inhabitants and the districts Unterkrombach, Mittelkrombach, Oberkrombach, Oberschur and the Hauenstein manors, Krombach is currently the second largest community in the upper Kahlgrund. In the past decades the place has turned into a well functioning residential community, with several small and medium-sized businesses, shops, inns, doctors and a primary school. Visitors can wind down on 50 kilometres of hiking trails leading through the diversified landscape of the Vorspessart.
