County of Kronach

Welcome to the County of Kronach

The county of Kronach features two different natural landscapes: the larger, north-eastern part is located in the Franconian Forest, wooded low mountain range with numerous valleys at 500 to 700 meters above sea level. Only the stubbed plateaus can be utilized for agriculture, the rest of the area is covered in forest on the steep slopes of the valleys and meadows in the river beds.

The other part of the county is located in the northern area of the Upper Main Hill Country. (Obermainisches Hügelland), which declines in a south-western direction from the Franconian Forest to about 300 to 500 m above sea level. The relief of this area is characterized by a terraced structure. This area can be used for agriculture whilst the lowlands of the Rodach and Steinach rivers are meadow land.

The south-western decline of the county is marked by the socalled “Franconian Line”, a fault which runs in the county of Kronach from Zeyern to Glosberg and Welitsch. The climate is characterized by the county’s location as a transition area between the Upper Main Hill Country and the Franconian Forest. From south-west to north-east it gets rougher and more humid. The county’s main rivers are the Rodach River with its tributaries, the rivers Steinach, Haßlach, Kronach and Wilder Rodach.

The distinctive water divide between the rivers Main-Rhine and Saale-Elbe also constitutes the main border in terms of language, culture and religion. The North is Thuringian and protestant, whilst in the South the Franconian language and culture and the catholic religion are prevalent. Along this divide you will also find the „Rennsteig“ (racing steep), an ancient path for express messengers and now a famous hiking route. On an 18 km stretch this famous path also leads you through the county of Kronach.

The county is also divided when it comes to the traditional styles of houses and buildings. In the northern part, the houses are mainly covered in slates, in the south sandstone, plastered walls and half-timbered houses are more common.

The merging of the districts of Kronach and Teuschnitz in 1931 formed today’s county of Kronach as an administrative entity.

In the county of Kronach locals and visitors alike can relax in the Franconian Forest nature park, marvel at the numerous sights and monuments and enjoy the cultural and recreational offerings.
