The county of Kulmbach is located within a diversified landscape, nestled into the geographic regions of the Frankenwald Forest, the Fichtel Mountains, Franconian Switzerland and the Upper Main Valley. The county’s landmark is the Hohenzollern fortress of Plassenburg, which towers over the county seat of Kulmbach. The old margrave city of Kulmbach, the center of the county, is located at the confluence of the Red and White Main River.
The region of Kulmbach still features the typical Franconian characteristics. In Kulmbach and many other towns of the area you’ll find an old town center with walls and towers, little alleys, timbered houses and romantic squares.
Historically, the region has mainly been influenced by the possessions of the Hohenzollern family, the counts of Andechs Merania and Orlamünde as well as the bishopric Bamberg. Numerous interesting parochial and secular buildings remind the observer of an eventful past. In the area of Kulmbach, culture, history, past and present are united in harmony.
