To fully understand the purpose of National Parks, it helps to go back to the time when the Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming/USA) was founded in the year 1872.
An era in North American history was slowly coming to an end: The pushing of the Western Frontier by white settlers whose handling of both native tribes and wildlife/environment was far from gentle. Before, the "Wild West" was relatively untouched compared to Central Europe, except for certain areas. The National Park offers free theme hikes.
High altitude hiking trails and a summer bobsleigh run; go sledding for 600 meter down towards Berchtesgaden Center, or just watch your kids have fun. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
Take the Hirscheckbahn chairlift up the Hohenschwarzeck for sunbathing and hikes; comfortable and easy on your circulation. Hard to believe, how ten relaxing minutes can change your perspective. Up there, there is no room for hustle and bustle - you will have no chance but to calm down. Good thing that you will find an abundance of deck chairs, and of course a "Schmankerl" (bavarian dialect for a special culinary treat) in the Hirschkaser Restaurant.
On top of Mount Jenner, overlooking Lake Königssee that is where nature's miracle reveals itself: a unique mountain experience! The Jennerbahn takes you up in comfortable two-people-gondolas that glide from the base station at the Königssee up into the bright sunlight, over dark fir trees, passing harsh rocks, up to the plateau at an altitude of 1802m - right into the middle of a glorious mountain landscape.
Put in operation as early as 1928, the Predigtstuhlbahn is considered the oldest original, all-year large-cabin cable car in the world. Also unique is Germany's highest mountain hotel, complete with restaurant and panorama deck. Enjoy the ride up and down, including a gourmet feast at Berghotel Predigtstuhl.
Imagine the pioneering achievement: After only one year of construction, the cable car was set into operation on 1 July, 1928, and it has been running the 2.4 km distance since then with hardly any technical changes. Today it offers a soothing contrast to those often futuristic-looking cable cars of a newer date.
A drive on Germany's highest (1600 m) panorama toll road is an unforgettable experience. The road is easy to reach by car or bus, and is also popular for motorcycle tours. Large, free-of-charge parking lots are available on the peak road and a panoramic view of the mountain regions lies ahead of you - open all year.
