In the year 2010, Oberammergau, a village situated in the Ammergau Alps and surrounded by imposing mountains and breathtaking views, will welcome its visitors to a very special event: the Oberammergau Passion Plays. From the middle of May to the beginning of October 2010, the village will be milling with guests who come to witness the fulfillment of vow made centuries ago.
17th century „Europe“ was shaken by terrible events. A war held the population it its grip for 30 years and brought along the plague in its wake. Almost two thirds of the southern german people died: if they were not killed by war activities they were carried off by famine and the black death. In Oberammergau, people cried out to God to put an end to this misery and they vowed to perform the story of life and death of Jesus Christ every ten years from then on. The Passion Play was first performed in 1634 and, according to records, no citizen of Oberammergau died of the plague after that.
To this day, the Passion Play is still performed by the native population only. All performers are highly dedicated: they devote a great part of their free time to rehearsals and - to create an authentic look - the men grow beards and women their hair for a year.
If you want to experience the commitment of a community to its ancient vow and the joy and professionalism of performers and artistic team, come and visit Oberammergau in 2010.
