Obergünzburg is possibly the oldest municipality in the former old county of Marktoberdorf. Its roots can be traced back to the 1st century AD – to a building near the Roman road of Kempten - Obergünzburg - Augsburg, approx. 300 m away from today’s city centre, on the „Nikolausberg“.

Due to its convenient location on the Roman road the place soon gained importance. After a local boom in trade and business, Obergünzburg provided supplies for the surrounding towns and cities. As Obergünzburg is now a regional centre, it still fulfils this task today. Obergünzburg is located at the heart of the Allgäu, 18 km from the Allgäu metropolis of Kempten as well as from Kaufbeuren. With currently 6,500 inhabitants it is one of the larger municipalities in the county of East Allgäu. An abundance of sports and leisure activities is of course provided.
