Churches, chapels, monasteries - there is a treasure around every corner, richly ornamented with stucco and frescos; it's heavenly beautiful. The highlight is the Wieskirche church near Steingaden, errected between 1745 and 1754 by Dominikus Zimmermann. And he really went at it full steam: Bavarian Rococo. An oval, light-flooded interior, columns, balconies, garlands, cherubs and icons. Gold everywhere, almost kitschy colors; must have been celestial intuition...
To take a systematic approach to visiting all this church architecture, you can hike along the "Prälatenweg" (path of the prelate). 144 kilometers, from Marktoberdorf to Kochel am See; 27 churches and monasteries in seven days.
