The Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Saviour in the Wies in Steingaden is one of the most famous Rococo churches in the world. Its centerpiece is a statue of the suffering Jesus Christ, the Scourged Saviour.
On June 14th, 1738 the farmer’s wife Maria Lory saw tears running down the face of the figure of the Scouraged Saviour. This miracle set off a large pilgrimage movement to the Scouraged Saviour in Wies, a district of Steingaden. From 1745 to 1754 the architect Dominikus Zimmermann created a unique church to house the famous statue.
The church is a masterpiece of Rococo art and counts approximately one million visitors a year, amongst them many pilgrims. The Wieskirche is a place where visitors stand in awe, many of whom come there to pray, to visit mass, to listen to one of the concerts that are held in summer and to silently venerate the Scouraged Saviour.
