County of Rhön-Grabfeld

Welcome to the County of Rhön-Grabfeld

The town of Bad Neustadt and its hosts, the modern health centers and clinics specializing in cardiovascular medicine, neurology, hand surgery and dialysis, as well as the numerous hotels and B&Bs, would like to extend a warm welcome to you. The town of Bad Königshofen is particularly popular with its spa, the „Franken Therme“, as well as its caravan campsite, which is conveniently located just in front of the health resort. Mellrichstadt, located on the autobahn A 71 is also known as “the gate to Thuringia”.

The gem of Ostheim is Germany’s biggest church ruin. Specialists also appreciate the organ museum in the Hanstein Castle. Fladungen, Bavaria’s northernmost town, houses the Franconian open air museum (Freilandmuseum), which offers numerous festivities, exhibitions, talks and guided tours all year round. It is also the starting point of the „Rhönzügle“, a “museum train” which leads to Mellrichstadt (railway line Erfurt-Würzburg).

In Oberelsbach you’ll find a biosphere reserve with an information center and the German Tobacco Pipe Museum. Bischofsheim is a popular destination for summer and winter sports, as well as the center for cycling and mountain biking enthusiasts. It is also home to Germany’s oldest sculptors’ school, where future masters are trained. The sculptors live in Bischofsheim and the small forest villages around Sandberg. Schönau is known as the place where Otto Feick invented the gym wheel in 1925. Numerous swimming lakes can be found in Burgwallbach, Irmelshausen and Sulzfeld, which also features the fairy tale park Sambachshof.

The German federal states of Hesse and Thuringia are connected by signposted hiking and biking trails. Hiking might have been invented in the Rhoen Mountains; in 1883 the first German hiking day took place in Fulda. The hiking trails of the nature park and the Rhoen Club lead you into the diversified landscape of the lower mountain range. The trails are also very popular with pilgrims. Their destination is the Kreuzberg (928 m) near Bischofsheim, known as the sacred mountain of the Franconians. In these surroundings you can easily combine piety, prayer and contemplation. And you can also enjoy a glass of the dark beer brewed in the monastery.

You like lofty heights? You can soar into the sky from the Wasserkuppe (950 m) and four airports. The largest hotel in the area is the Rhön Park Hotel near Hausen/Rhön.
