The beautiful community of Rückholz has a long history. In the Middle Ages it was property of the Füssen monastery St. Mang. The abbot was the community’s landlord and exerted the right of lower jurisdiction from 1474 to 1803. Some remarkable buildings like the church, the vicarage and the St. Mary’s grotto date back to that time.
The Falkensberg sovereignty began in the 15th century. When Emperor Maximilian discovered the beauty of the county, he bought the sovereignty in 1512 and had the Schwaltenweiher pond built. It is still the most popular swimming pond amongst local residents.
Today Rückholz is an Allgäu village with 24 hamlets, surrounded by unique countryside: Idyllic lakes and ponds, lush meadows, soft hills and the impressive alpine panorama nearby. Influenced by agriculture, handicraft and gastronomy, life here is still laid-back and quiet. People live of and with nature, are traditional and warm-hearted – this is what makes our rural village so interesting for senior citizens, families and those looking for recreation.
