Beer gardens, picturesque places and houses with beautiful facade paintings. Experience storybook Upper Bavaria. Embedded in smoothly curved moraine hills, the holiday paradise Starnberg, the five lake country, is only 20 km away from Munich and lies in front of the majestic scenery of Bavaria"s Alps.

Very much is done to preserve this unique natural and cultural landscape. There are nine preserve areas, more than two thirds of Starnberg"s five lake country are a protected area and the excellent water quality will guarantee a flawless stay.

Former monarchs and many artists appreaciated the beauty of this extraordinary landscape. "Sisi", the empress of Austria who spent 24 summers in her residence in Feldafing which is today known as "Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth", met frequently with "swan king" Ludwig II of Bavaria at lake Starnberg. Rose Island offshore from Feldafing, their meeting point, can be reached by a flat wooden boat called "Plätte". Ludwig II used to spend his summers in Berg castle on the lake. The commemorative chapel "Votivkapelle" and teh memorial cross in the lake remind us of the king"s tragic death.

For centuries, towering over lake Ammersee stands the mighty "sacred mountain" of Bavaria, Andechs monastery, one of Germany"s three most famous pilgrimage goals. Here millions of visitors admire Europe"s largest collection of votive candles and the Rokoko style church. The monastery is also famous for the high quality of its beer, brewed here since 1455. Enjoy six different brands in the beer parlor or the monastery inn.

The five lake country Stranberg offers numerous opportunities for physically active guests: swimming in the lakes and indoor pools, sailing plus windsurfing and waterskiing. Fishing is possible in all five lakes and 250 km of biking routes and 180 km of hiking trails are a perfect way to discover the picturesque scenery.

Munich, the Bavarian capital, can be easily reached by urban train S-Bahn from all five lakes (30-45 minute ride). This makes the area an ideal base for those interested in spending time in the "City with a Heart" who are looking for a reasonably priced accomodation in a placid atmosphere.

A cruise on Starnberger See and Ammersee is a memorable experience. Four boats operate on both lakes from Easter Sunday to the middle of October, passing historic sites and art treasures from Baroque and Rococo. Particularly during foehn wind, the mountains in the background form an impressive scenery.
