Highlights of the Tegernsee-Schliersee Region

History comes alive at the Tegernsee monastery

TegernseeThis Benedictine abbey was founded in 746 AD, the valley was populated and cultivated by monks and feudal people. In its golden ages the abbey held 11.000 estates, vineyards in South Tyrol and the Wachau region among them.

It was home of the most significant library of its time and the valley gained fame due to its schoolmasters, professors, men of letters, musicians and composers. Its founders, the aristocratic brothers Adalbert and Otkar Huosi, would certainly be very proud of it today. And they would be happy if you paid a visit!

The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as the result of the Bavarian secularization and its remaining buildings eventually became the property of King Max I Josef of Bavaria.

The present edifice hosts a secondary school, a parish church, a brewery and the famous ducal inn "Bräustüberl Tegernsee". There's much to see and feast on! The annual Waldfest in July is one of the highlights. Locals, tourists and recently also many Munich residents who dicovered the Waldfest festival at Tegernsee meet here.

The festival is organized by the local skiing club, which also gains the proceeds.

Great views at lake Schliersee

SchlierseeLake Schliersee with its mountain railways is the ideal place for those who want to reach the summit in a comfortable way. The Taubenstein cable car and the Stümpfling chair lift, modernized in 2004, as well as the Suttenbahn cable car bring both summer and winter sportspeople to the Spitzing region, one of Bavaria's most beautiful mountain regions.

A ride to the summit station of mount Taubenstein takes 15 minutes. Enjoy fantastic views in about 1600 meters a.s.l.

The Chiemgau mountains can be seen in the east, Zugspitze and the Wetterstein massif are located in the west, and even the three thousand meter peaks of mount Großglockner and mount Großvenediger in the south appear to be within one's grasp on clear days.

Schliersbergalm and its hotel are located high above at lake Schliersee and can be reached by the Schliersbergbahn cable car, which has been in use for more than 50 years. A magnificent panorama reveals itself at 1061 meters a.s.l.

The diverse mountain flora of the Schliersberg mountains is unique and can be experienced on broad hiking trails.

Further highlights of this beautiful vacation area include the Markus Wasmeier Farm and Wintersport Musuem.
