Sisi`s Road

A biographical travel tour tracing the footsteps of Empress Elisabeth from Augsburg to Geneva

Sisi’s Road, among the twelve most beautiful touristic routes worldwide, continues to win prominent international partners such as Hotel Beau-Rivage on Lake Geneva, Golfhotel Kaiserin Elisabeth on Lake Starnberg and Achilleion on the island of Corfu. The prize-winning European route filled with culture and initiated by Regio Augsburg in 2002, is also a historical and biographical guide about the Empress of Austria.

Sisi’s road follows stages in the life of Empress and Queen Elisabeth, a sophisticated woman who traveled throughout Europe. The Bavarian starting point and western origin of Sisi’s road is Augsburg, city of the Fuggers, in which Elisabeth’s brother lived as an officer on Maximilianstrasse. Young Sisi experienced carefree childhood days in “Wittelsbach country” in Aichach not far from Augsburg. The Sisi-Mansion, which was long the favorite summer residence of Sisi’s father Duke Max in Bavaria, is found in the district of Unterwittelsbach. The nearby palace in Kühbach and the hunting lodge Rapperzell also belonged to Sisi’s father who owned a huge hunting ground in Wittelsbach country. A new partner along the Bavarian route is the Golfhotel Kaiserin Elisabeth on Lake Starnberg.

From Augsburg or Aichach it takes less than one hour by car to arrive in Munich, the birthplace of Elisabeth of Austria, as well as at Lake Starnberg. Here is the Possenhofen castle – the summer residence of Sisi’s mother Ludovika and as of 1850 also of her father. The Elisabeth Museum is located in the train station of Possenhofen. Possenhofen is across from the Berg castle where King Ludwig II mysteriously drowned in the lake. The extremely eccentric Bavarian king met with his beautiful cousin Elisabeth on Rose Island near Feldafing. Here both the park and rose garden were restored and the island is open again for viewing. Tours of the island and the casino are available, and in the summer, concerts are held on Rose Island. Golfhotel Kaiserin Elisabeth in Feldafing surprises visitors with a Sisi-Suite with original furniture and “Sisi-Dishes” from the menu of the empress.

The eastern segment of Sisi’s Road stretches with approximately 800 km from Wittelsbach country to Budapest. To the south the route leads from Augsburg through Füssen to Austria, through Italy to the Miramare Palace in Trieste. In Switzerland the Genevan office of tourism and Hotel Beau Rivage on Lake Geneva are now partners of the route.

The route is highlighted by the European dimension: Sisi’s Road reaches across Hungary, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. In addition to impressive monuments and historical cityscapes, Sisi-fans can visit museums, cultural events and admire outstanding garden and park landscapes. In the program for Sisi’s Road, well-known tour operators with wellness and garden tours have been included. Sisi’s Road is a recommended travel route for individual tourists as well as tourist groups.
