The county of Lower Allgäu is located at the heart of „Bavarian Swabia“. The county's border in the west is mainly demarcated by the river Iller and in the east by the river Wertach. The southern part of the county is made up of the grassland of the Alpine foothills; the northern part belongs to the Iller-Lech plateau of the Swabian-Bavarian hill country.
The county borders the county of Neu-Ulm to the north-west, the county of Günzburg to the north, the county of Augsburg to the north-east, the East Allgäu to the east and the county of Oberallgäu to south and south-west. In the west it meets the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg with the counties of Ravensburg and Biberach. The county is part of the Donau-Iller region.
