Google Maps Weilheilm-Schongau County
Weilheim-Schongau County is located in the south-western part of Upper Bavaria at the border to Swabia. On this side it shares borders with Eastern Allgäu County, with Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the South, with Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen in the East, with Starnberg County in the North-East, and finally with Landsberg/Lech County in the North.
The dominating rivers are the Lech in the West (ca. 35 km), the Ammer in the center (from the Echelsbach bridge to the mound into Lake Ammersee, 45 km), and the Loisach (ca. 13 km) in the very East. The summit “Hoher Peissenberg” (alt. 988 m) divides the county into the Western (Schongau Area) and the Eastern (Weilheim Area) halves.
The West reaches is extends to a larger mountain crest of which the summit of Auerberg Mountain (alt. 1,055 m) marks its highest point. The highest altitude is reached at the summit of Niederbleick Mountain (alt. 1,589 m), the lowest at the Ammer River mound at Fischen am Ammersee (Pähl municipality), at 533 m.
From west to east, Weilheim-Schongau County extends for about 70 kilometers; from south to north it does so for about 30 kilometers. As of today, it includes 20 nature reserves, 18 landscape conservation areas, 93 natural monuments, and numerous ground monuments (mostly cairns from the days of the Celts).
