The county of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen is the southernmost county of the Bavarian administrative district of Central Franconia. Neighboring counties are the county of Ansbach to the north-west, the county of Roth to the north, the county of Eichstätt to the east and the county of Donau-Ries to the south.

The county of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen is subdivided into three different geographical regions: in the south there are the Franconian Hills (Weißenburger Alb) with its wooded plateaus, which meets the foothills of the Alb located in the center of the county, and in the north there is the Central Franconian Basin. The river Altmühl crosses the country from north-west to south-east. Located along the river there are the towns of Gunzenhausen, Treuchtlingen and Pappenheim.
