Located in Chiemgau, this lake is a remnant of the past. Arisen during the ice age, it is also referred to as the "Bavarian Sea " due to its enormous size.
The Chiemsee is Bavaria's largest lake and it extends more than 80 kilometers and the deepest point is at 90 meters.
Restaurants and delis nearby are provided with Bavarian seafood by local fishermen. Popular examples include zander, vendace, brown trout, pike, perch and eel. Have a delicious meal in one of the many restaurants or visit the Fraueninsel (Ladies Island) and Herrenchiemsee castle to enjoy the beautiful environment.
This island is the smaller one of the two islands in lake Chiemsee.
While Herrenchiemsee (Gentlemen's Island), site of Herrenchiemsee castle, is a largely uninhabited natural space, Fraueninsel is populated with a small fishing village.
To this day the history of Fraueninsel is closely related to the benedictine nunnery, which was founded by Tassilo III, the last Agilofingian duke, at the same time as the monastery on Herrenchiemsee around 782 AD.
Led by Irmingard, daughter of King Ludwig the German, the nunnery experienced its first bloom in the 9th century. The Carolingian hall dates from this era.

Built in accordance with the ideas of King Ludwig II, this castle is the luxuriant and magnificent symbol of absolutism in revolutionary times. He did not want it to become a simple domicile, but rather a magnificent building for representative purposes. Hence, the castle is stunningly furnished and a guided tour is highly recommended not only for those who want to glance over the lavish generosity.
King Ludwig II included his own plans and suggestions in the construction, many creative conceptions and elements are the result of his work and there is much to find out not only about the castle, but particularly about the King, who saved the island from deforestation with this noble edifice.
