County of Wunsiedel

Welcome to the County of Wunsiedel

A characteristic feature of the Wunsiedel county are its medieval fortifications and castles, like the castles in Thierstein or Hohnberg, which offer great views into the neighboring Egerland area, the fortresses of Arzberg and Thierstein, and the historic town hall in Marktredwitz.

Popular Destinations

Other popular destinations are the castle ruin Epprechtstein near Kirchenlamitz, the Kösseinehaus and the mountains Ochsenkopf, Waldstein, and Kornberg. The Fichtel Mountains (Fichtelgebirge) offers an abundance of great destinations!

From dark woods to sunny meadows, visitors are fascinated by the county’s mystic forests as well as by the picturesque rock labyrinth in Luisenburg. Other popular sights are the distinct Keller- und Scheunenwege in Weißenstadt or the Renaissance castle of Röthenbach. Also worth a visit is the town of Selb, with house fronts designed by artists like Hundertwasser, Piene and Morandini.

Surrounding Area

If this is not enough for you, you can quickly reach the famous health resorts of Bad Alexandersbad, Karlsbad, Marienbad and Franzensbad, as well as the old imperial town of Eger or the world-famous monastery’s library of Waldsassen. Daytrips to Franconian Switzerland (Fränkische Schweiz), the cities of Bayreuth, Bamberg, Coburg, Hof and Nuremberg, or to the Franconian Forest (Frankenwald) or the Erz Mountains (Erzgebirge) are possible as well.

The county boasts a plethora of cultural offerings that activate all senses and that are as diversified as its people. There are many other exotic, profound or funny things to discover, besides the major tourist attractions.

Lights, music, curtain!

The Luisenburg-Festspiele, a summer-theater which is held on Germany’s most picturesque natural stage, is famous far beyond the county’s borders. German actors entertain their audience in the setting of a rock labyrinth and perform fairy tales, operas, Bavarian comedies and Shakespearean dramas, and classical as well as modern plays. The Rosenthal-Theatre in Selb and the theater in Hof have set standards with their diversified and international program. They never cease to surprise their visitors with cabaret and programs that discuss present times.

A highlight for musical gourmets are the Hofer Symphoniker and the Festival "Mitte Europa" (with events in Bavaria, Bohemia and Saxony). World-famous artists like Lord Yehudi Menuhin and his son Jeremy or the avant-garde specialist Mauricio Kagel perform(ed) in the county’s churches, castles and concert halls.

Home of Films

Of course the county’s towns and villages have a lot to offer to their audience off-season as well. The film festivals "Internationale Filmtage Hof" and the "Grenzlandfilmtage" in Selb are a magnet for film-enthusiasts and events, during which film-makers from all over the world, especially form Eastern Europe, meet.

Tradition and History

For visitors with a high interest in culture, the county offers numerous museums and exhibitions, for example the German Porcelain Museum in Hohenberg and Selb, which is internationally renowned for its special exhibitions. In the Fichtelgebirgsmuseum in Wunsiedel, the Volkskundliche Gerätemuseum in Arzberg and the Egerlandmuseum in Marktredwitz visitors can find out more about the history of the county and its people, their traditional ways of living and their traditional professions.

Health Treatments in the Fichtel Mountains

Bad Alexandersbad im Fichtelgebirge, located at the foothills of Luisenburg Castle, houses the Luisen Spring and is one of the designated spas in Upper Franconia. The spring was named after Queen Luise of Prussia, to celebrate her visit to the area in 1805. Where German royals used to cure their ailments, there can be found modern health facilities today. Visitors benefit from the remedial powers of local plants and the natural moor mud. The success of the treatment is supported by the location of the spa in a forest at 590 meters above sea level and great air quality.
