Sleep like a king

Palaces and castles offer traditional flair and modern amenities

In former times the King’s visitors would not just stay in any old hotel but in adequate accommodation. This is why one of the most charming hotels in Munich was built: the Bayerische Hof. King Ludwig I had this magnificent neo-classical building erected at the Promenadeplatz in 1841 to house his guests. Today even commoners may stay in the Bayrischer Hof, where they are surrounded by modern luxury: the hotel features tastefully decorated rooms and suites, three restaurants and six bars, including a famous jazz club, as well as a modern spa area with a roof pool. Of course from the roof guests can enjoy a „royal“ view of the City of Munich.

Romantic atmosphere within old castle walls

Royal past and present meet at the Amerang Castle in the Chiemgau. This medieval castle, which was designed without a right angle, is still in royal hands and was turned into a hotel by the lady of the castle, Giulia Baroness of Crailsheim-Larisch. She made some major changes within the building: two large rooms have been converted into a suite with antique furniture and luxurious textiles. The perfect place to spend your honeymoon, especially in combination with the offer „Castle for two“: for 490 € you can spend a night in the suite, enjoy an exquisite three-course meal and an opulent in-room breakfast. In summer, top-class concerts are held in the castle’s courtyard.

Pamper yourself in the Schlosshotel

Tourists who like to spend their vacation in a romantic setting, will enjoy the Bonnschlössl at Lake Chiemsee. With comfortable rooms and little turrets, all set within a large park, this picturesque manor built in 1477 is the ideal accommodation for couples. There is also a broad offer of spa treatments, for example the „Pampering days“: The package at a price of 359 € for two people includes two nights, half-board, a relaxing massage, a Pantai Luar stamp massage, an oil bath, a classic facial and last but not least a trip on a Chiemsee cruising ship including a visit to Herrenchiemsee Castle.

Hotel Kaiserin ElisabethIn the bed of Empress Elisabeth

If you want more than just castles and manors you can go as far as sleeping in the same bed as the most famous Empress of all times, Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The name of the hotel „Kaiserin Elisabeth“ in Feldafing goes back the famous guest that once stayed there. A statue of Empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi, welcomes the guests in the romantic hotel park. In the original Sisi-Suite, couples can spend a holiday in an imperial atmosphere.

Outside, on the hotel’s terrace, you can overlook Lake Starnberg and the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. This is the area where Empress Sisi grew up, so it is not surprising that she chose to stay in this very hotel whenever she came to visit her home country.

The spa hotel of the King of Bavaria

The life of a monarch can be tough and tiring and this is why in 1848 King Max I of Bavaria went to stay at a health spa for several weeks. He chose the „Curhaus Axelmannstein“ in Bad Reichenhall, which had opened its doors two years before. The King’s visit was brilliant publicity for the hotel, and soon the hotel became the best known hotel in Reichenhall. In 1956 it was bought by the Steigenberger group and revamped from scratch. Today the grand hotel features 152 rooms, a large wellness area, and several tennis courts. Staying at the Axelmannstein is truly a pleasure for body and soul!

Royal Cuisine

There may not be any royal presence (past or present) at the „Residenz“ in Aschau in the Chiemgau area, but the hotel’s chef Heinz Winkler is definitely a master of his trade. In the erstwhile medieval hotel and restaurant complex he serves dishes that meet the highest standards. Gourmets who would like to combine an exquisite dinner with a stay at the hotel can book the „Winterlichen Gourmetzauber“-package from 380 Euros per person. It includes a two night stay with breakfast, a welcoming drink, a three-course meal from the “Cuisine Vitale” and a five-course formal dinner.

Holiday residence of today

„Live like a king in comfortable chambers“ – that’s the motto of the newly opened Hotel Maximilian in Oberammergau. The hotel looks back on an aristocratic past but also features modern comfort and luxury. Entrepreneurs Silke and Ralf Schmidt have opened this hotel, which features a large wellness area as well as several gourmet restaurants – a perfect destination for royals and commoners of today.
