Freising County is situated within the northern parts of Upper Bavaria, bordering on Lower Bavaria in its North-East. It is surrounded by the adjacent counties of Munich, Dachau, Pfaffenhofen a.d.Ilm, Kelheim, Landshut, and Erding.
It covers an area of about 800 sq. km. which is about the average size of Bavarian counties. Its area extends to the South-West where it includes large parts of Munich’s rubble plain; in the North, it stretches far into the rolling countryside of Hallertau.
The River Isar crosses the county from the South-West to the North-East, the River Amper from the West to the East, joining the Isar at Volkmannsdorf. The county’s location is regarded as excellent when it comes to traffic and transport connections: with an excellent motorway network, well-kept regional roads, stops for national trains, the near-by international airport of Munich, and a connection to Munich’s suburban train system.
