Christmas markets determine the atmosphere of Bavarian cities from late November to the third week of December.
Even with your eyes closed you can picture it: The scent of steaming mulled wine and roasted chestnuts is just as typical as the sound of the jingle bells, and the live brass melodies you can hear all around.
You can buy countless gifts everywhere: Mouth blown Christmas tree decoration, wooden figures and much more ....
Even better is the particular atmosphere: a mix of nostalgia, amazement and anticipation. Especially in large cities such as Bamberg, Ingolstadt, Munich, Nuremberg, Neuburg on River Danube, or Rosenheim, the supply is abundant!
Worth a visit are also the countless events in smaller towns, which are often less crowded. For example, in Bad Tölz, where the historic old town provides a perfect setting; in Andechs, where a living nativity scene can be seen in the courtyard of the famous monastery; or on the romantic Fraueninsel (Lady's Island) on Lake Chiemsee which you can only reach by boat.
Among the many markets you can find throughout Bavaria we have chosen 15 which are definitely worth a visit:
