
Unique - the "Maria de Victoria" Congregation Hall. It ist only possible to appreciate the true magnificence of the baroque "Maria de Victoria" Congregation Hall, also known as the "Asam Church", when you step inside, as it does not have a forecourt or towers and is somewhat hidden away in the old town. Two exceptionally valuable artistic treasures decorate this architectural gem, built between 1732 and 1736 as the oratory of the Marian student congregation.
The Incarnation of the Lord is the subject of the phenomenal ceiling fresco, painted at the height of his creativity by Cosmas Damian Asam, the most famous Bavarian baroque artist. This masterly achievement in prespective, the largest flat ceiling fresco of the world at 42 metres by 16 metres, can be admired best by walking round. Completed in 1708, the monstrance stands in the treasure-chamber. This filigree work of art, set in gold and silver, represents the victory of the Christians against the Turks in the sea battle of Lepanto. It is a unique portrayal of a battle on the most valuable monstance in the world.
