The county of Miltenberg makes up the southern part of the Bavarian Lower Main region, which is located in the north-western corner of Bavaria.
The county of Miltenberg borders the German federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg in the south and south-east and Hesse in the west. It is surrounded by three counties or non-county municipalities: to the north, there is the city and the county of Aschaffenburg, to the east there is the county of Main-Spessart.
The Bavarian region of the Lower Main belongs to the fringes of the urban agglomeration of the Rhine-Main area with the city of Frankfurt, which influences this area to a great extent.
The county of Miltenberg is a comparably young administrative entity. It was formed in the local government reform on the 1st July 1972. It comprises of the former counties Miltenberg and Obernburg-on-the-Main (without the communities of Pflaumheim and Wenigumstadt) as well as the communities of the former county of Marktheidenfeld in the southern Spessart area.
